In January 2011, the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal demonstrated its leadership by announcing that it was becoming the first carbon neutral board of trade in Quebec.

Through a partnership with the ZEROCO2 organization, the Board of Trade committed itself to reducing its daily ecological footprint and to offsetting twice the greenhouse gas emissions associated with its activities by planting trees in urban settings and buying carbon credits.

This initiative advances the Board of Trade’s sustainable development policy established in 2008, and makes a new practice part of this policy. The Board of Trade would like this measure to inspire its members and the Montréal business community by demonstrating that every effort counts when it comes to fighting climate change.

Beginning the greenhouse gas quantification process

The last few months have seen the Québec government confirm its commitment to a dynamic policy to fight climate change by joining the WCI (Western Climate Initiative) and by implementing the first phase of placing a ceiling on emissions for large producers of greenhouse gases (GHG). Over the next few years, this first phase will progressively extend to other sectors of economic activity in Québec. In this way, the government will be able to encourage the entire territory to conform to one of the most important common markets in the Americas.
