With the mandate of supporting, training and advising Quebec businesses in their efforts to expand on and to foreign markets, World Trade Centre Montréal (WTCM) is always on the lookout for the best opportunities available around the world.

 

The Let’s Export Quebec initiative rests on a specialization strategy focused on markets that offer a significant international new business potential for Quebec SMEs.

 

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • A population of 194.4 million (2010), which accounts for 2.8% of the global population;
  • A dynamic market teeming with major projects, including:
    • The 2014 FIFA World Cup;
    • The 2016 Rio Olympic Games;
  • Business opportunities in a number of economic sectors, for instance, oil and gas services, mining equipment and services, telecommunications, automotive, energy and environmental technologies.

 

MARKET OVERVIEW

  • A $2,023 billion (USD) nominal gross domestic product (GDP) in 2010, or 3.3% of the global GDP;
  • Ranked as the 7th economic power (2010);
  • Main imports (by economic sector):
    • Machinery and industrial equipment (26%);
    • Chemicals (16%).

CANADA/QUEBEC – BRAZIL RELATIONS

  • Brazil is at the heart of the Canadian strategy for the Americas. A number of agreements, treaties, and memorandums of understanding were signed between the two countries over the years. This fosters greater collaboration in the fields of sciences and technologies, education, health and sustainable mining development.
  •  

  • Brazil is the only South American country considered a priority by the new Quebec International Policy (QIP). This decision led to the founding of Bureau du Québec à São Paulo (BQSP) in 2008.
  •  

  • The Quebec government intends to take an active part in the many events that Brazil will host over the next few years:
    • April 2012 – Meeting of the government leaders of partner regions (São Paulo);
    • June 2012 – United Nations conference on sustainable development (Rio+20);
    • 2014 – Soccer World Cup;
    • 2016 – Olympic Games.

  • $2.4 billion (CDN) in Canadian exports to Brazil in 2010.
  •  

  • $885.5 million (CDN) in Quebec exports to Brazil in 2010 (up 77.7% vs. the previous year).
