THE ACADEMY OF GREAT MONTREALERS
Each year, the Academy of Great Montrealers is proud to honour four Montreal luminaries who have distinguished themselves through outstanding contributions to the community in their respective spheres of activity, whether that be economic, social, cultural, or scientific. At this annual reception, the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal pays homage to the Great Montrealers chosen by the Academy, whose exceptional contributions to the prestige of our city serve as an inspiration to all.
HISTORY
In 1978 , the CN founded a gala to honour Great Montrealers.
In 1984 , the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal and the CN joined forces to ensure the survival of
this annual event honouring new Great Montrealers.
In 1988 , the Board of Trade created the Academy of Great Montrealers, which now has 114 academicians
including the four individuals selected in 2010.
Great Montrealers, Major partner members of the Board of Trade, and members of the Board of Trade's board of directors all nominate people they would like to see inducted into the Academy. The nominating committee then submits a list of four names in each of four sectors of activity – economic, cultural, social, and scientific – to the entire Academy, and a vote is then held to select the four new members.
Each year, during the reception honouring the new Great Montrealers, the Academy also presents Awards of excellence for outstanding research to three students who completed their doctoral degrees at one of Montreal's
four universities or their affiliated schools.
