THOMAS MULCAIR is Deputy Leader of the New Democratic Party of Canada and the Member of Parliament for Outremont, Québec.
He holds degrees in Civil Law (B.C.L.) and in Common Law (LL.B.) from McGill University. He was elected President of the Law Students Association. Read more [+]
He has been elected six times to political office: three times in the National Assembly and three times in the House of Commons.
From 2003 to 2006 he served as Quebec's Minister of Sustainable Development, Environment and Parks. In 2006 he resigned from Cabinet on a question of principle when he refused to sign an order-in-council transferring lands in Mont-Orford Provincial Park to private developers who wanted to build condos.
In 2007 Jack Layton asked Mr. Mulcair to become the NDP's Quebec Lieutenant. Following his election later that year, Mr. Layton also named him Deputy Party Leader.
An experienced public administrator, he was appointed President of the Quebec professions board by his political mentor, Claude Ryan.
Following the spectacular win of 103 seats, including 59 in Quebec, in the 2011 General Election, Jack Layton named Thomas Mulcair Parliamentary House Leader of the NDP Official Opposition.
