Montréal, October 20, 2015 – After yesterday’s federal elections, the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal would like to congratulate Prime Minister-designate Justin Trudeau and the Liberal Party of Canada for their victory, along with all the candidates who ran and enriched the democratic process and debate.

“The new government needs to recognize that businesses are a driving force and that major cities are a breeding ground for entrepreneurship,” said Michel Leblanc, President and CEO of the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal. “Growing our collective wealth depends upon strong companies and prosperous, robust cities.”

“During the campaign, the Board of Trade invited the major parties to address the regional business community’s three priorities: investing in public transit infrastructure, access to financing for international trade and reviewing the reform of the Temporary Foreign Worker Program,” Michel Leblanc said. “The Liberal Party committed to quadrupling federal funding for public transit in the next ten years and investing close to an additional $20 billion. As the second largest city in Canada, Montréal must receive its fair share to increase its vitality and improve its economic performance.”

“The fact that the Liberal Party intends to develop a new strategy to promote exports and help companies draw benefit from new free trade agreements is good news,” Mr. Leblanc said. “The Board of Trade would like to reiterate its commitment to work with the new government to help local businesses grow and contribute to the collective wealth of our city.”

“We would also like to point to the contribution of outgoing Prime Minister Stephen Harper, in particular for his careful management of public finances and for entering into trade agreements that are strategic for Canada and Canadian business,” Mr. Leblanc said.
