THE CONSTRUCTION MARKET IN NEW-YORK

A city constantly on the move, New York exemplifies drive and performance in the industrial, commercial, and institutional (ICI) construction sector, despite the decline currently affecting the industry in the United States.

In addition, construction meeting environmental standards is constantly on the rise. By 2013, this type of construction should grow by 20 to 25 %, according to the U.S. Green Building Council. Openings for green construction products and energy efficient solutions can be seen in all construction sectors.

More and more frequently, New York commercial buildings are adopting LEED standards, both on new sites and for existing buildings. Since the city’s recent adoption of the “Greener, Greater Buildings Plan” legislation—which aims to improve the energy efficiency of existing and under construction buildings greater than 10,000 square feet—, innovative energy efficiency measures should be given priority and be frequently updated.

Taking into consideration the number of public construction sites benefitting from the special funding in the Obama administration’s recent economic stimulus package, opportunities for Canadian construction products and materials will be numerous in the short term, as they are no longer handicapped by the recovery plan’s “Buy American” clause.
