Earth Day 2007: The business community is wide awake!

On April 22, we will be celebrating Earth Day. That does not mean we should be concerned about the environment on that day alone. Far from it. Earth Day gives us an opportunity to reflect, to set goals for ourselves and plan how to act responsibly and constructively throughout the coming year. Much remains to be done to protect the environment and, most important of all, real progress is possible, but only if every individual starts making his or her contribution right away.

To guarantee a promising future for our planet, every small action counts. Nowadays it is more feasible than ever to reconcile economic development and care of the environment. We believe that there is a real potential in developing environmental action within small and mid-sized businesses because their structures are highly flexible, and so they are capable of making surprising environmental shifts, even though their resources are limited. To support this view, the Board of Trade is drawing up a list of actions that are simple, concrete and easy to perform, which it intends to release to the business community, more specifically to small- and medium-sized businesses. The large companies will be valuable allies in helping us achieve these goals: the expertise they have developed can be useful elsewhere, and they also serve as examples that are both useful and inspiring.

As part of your environmental contribution, I urge you to take part in the collection of hazardous wastes and computer and electronic components that will be held on Friday, April 20, between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. at the Balmoral Block, on the south-west corner of de Maisonneuve Blvd. and Jeanne-Mance St. Fill out the registration form today!

I invite each of you to mark Earth Day 2007 in your own way next April 22. I hope many will take part. It's up to us to make the difference!
