Certification of compliance for products sold overseas:
the World Trade Centre Montréal and
the Centre de recherche industrielle du Québec
combine their expertise in a training partnership agreement

Montreal, November 12, 2003 – Today – at CRIQ's Espace innovation at the Forum Export 2003 - the World Trade Centre Montréal (WTC Montréal) and the Centre de recherche industrielle du Québec (CRIQ) announced a new partnership agreement for the development of training workshops.

The goal of these workshops will be to bring entrepreneurs up to speed on the standards and regulatory constraints in force in various countries and to help them take the necessary steps to earn certificates of compliance for the products they export.

“For Quebec companies, especially SMEs, exporting is not a luxury but an economic necessity because their prosperity depends more and more on their ability to adapt to the requirements of international trade. The training workshops developed within the framework of this new partnership will thus provide valuable technical support to Quebec exporters by allowing them to remain fully informed about the various standards and requirements in their target export countries and to prepare their products accordingly,” declared Benoit Labonté, president of the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal.

“Based on our experience, the products we test for exporting SMEs needing to meet standards requirements in foreign countries do not pass the validation phase almost 90 percent of the time. With this training, we want to play a preventive role with companies by helping them to better prepare their products for export and thus avoid major expenses,” agreed Carole Lachance, vice-president, partnership and market development, at CRIQ.

The WTC Montréal and CRIQ will also develop “made-to-measure” training workshops adapted to one or more specific companies on subjects related to exporting products. Workshops will focus primarily on the manufacturing sector, specifically in the fields of transportation, furniture, electronics, construction, plastics, and agro-food.

The scope of this partnership will extend to the entire province of Quebec since workshops will be given not just in Greater Montreal but also in most regions of the province simultaneously. To this end, the WTC Montréal and CRIQ will work with the regional economic development organizations concerned with exports to enable their clienteles to benefit from these workshops.

A branch of the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal, World Trade Centre Montréal is supported by Canada Economic Development and offers export services to the greater business community.

CRIQ's mission is to stimulate the economic development of Quebec by supporting companies in their efforts to innovate. CRIQ places its state-of-the-art expertise at the service of companies based on a comprehensive understanding of their needs.
