Jacques Parisien appointed chairman of the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal

Montreal, October 24, 2002 - At the annual meeting of the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal today, its members appointed Jacques Parisien to the position of chairman of the board for a one-year term.  He succeeds Mr. Guy Fréchette, vice-chairman and Quebec managing partner at Ernst & Young.  Mr. Fréchette now becomes retiring chairman of the board.

President and CEO of Astral Radio, Mr. Parisien has been active in the communications industry since 1975.  He joined Astral Media Inc. in 1997 and now heads the Astral Radio division, owner of Am and FM radio stations in eastern Canada.  He also sits on the executive committee of Astral Media Inc.  Previously, he held management positions with Télémédia and Pelmorex Communications Inc.

Following the creation of the position of permanent president, now occupied by Mr. Benoit Labonté, whose primary responsibility is to serve as principal public spokesperson for the Board of Trade, the role of chairman is of a great importance.  In addition to being the Board of Trade's principal spokesperson to its members, the chairman is actively involved in Board of Trade initiatives for a two-year period - first as chairman and then as retiring chairman - during which time he sits on both the executive committee and the human resource committee.  This two-year commitment ensures continuity from one year to the next as changes linked to the position of chairman are implemented.

"To ensure the excellence of its actions, the Board of Trade has equipped itself judiciously, beginning with the development of a "Policy Statement" providing a framework for its analysis of what must done by Greater Montreal's business community to ensure we become the prosperous, competitive city-region we aspire to be.  It is thus with a concern for cohesion among the players that we approach the coming years: cohesion among the stakeholders as well as the coherence of their actions, so as to maximize the creativity that characterizes the metropolitan business community," concluded Guy Fréchette, retiring chairman.

The Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal has more than 7 000 members. Its mission is to be the leading group representing the interests of the Greater Montreal business community. The objectives are to maintain, at all times, relevance to its membership, credibility towards the media and influence towards government and decision-makers.
