Quebec 2010 Strategic Focus:
Release of the discussion paper For Quebec 3.0

Montréal, September 13, 2010 – Marcel Côté, Founding Partner of SECOR, and Michel Leblanc, President and CEO of the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal, today released the report of conclusions from Quebec 2010 Strategic Focus held on April 22 entitled For Quebec 3.0. They were accompanied by emerging business leaders and members of the business community.

A private initiative of SECOR in partnership with the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal, Strategic Focus provided an opportunity for high-level deliberations on the challenges facing Quebec in the coming years. For Quebec 3.0 sums up this original approach to change and offers concrete avenues for solutions.

“The solution lies in acknowledging that these problems involve us all and that we can’t delay in tackling them,” Marcel Côté said.

“The Board of Trade is very proud to have contributed to Quebec 2010 Strategic Focus,” Michel Leblanc said. “It resulted in businesspeople rallying for Quebec’s development in a constructive, dynamic way. It brought together leaders from different milieus and different generations, all of whom care deeply about the future and success of Quebec.

A number of issues were identified for building a solid foundation for Quebec:

  • The main priority issues, for which there is widespread support to resolve, are:
    • Knowledge and skills: national priorities
    • More effectively integrating immigrants
    • The deficit and the debt
    • Rethinking the role of government
    • Sustainable development and energy supply

  • Other issues that need to be explored more fully, on which Quebec remains divided in terms of accepting and addressing them, are:
    • Improving productivity
    • Promoting entrepreneurship
    • Balanced management of the province
    • Globalization: the Quebec paradox

“Discussions shed light on a number of fundamental issues that we have to think about and act on collectively,” Michel Leblanc said. “Like all of the partners for this event, the Board of Trade is committed to taking action immediately. For instance, the fall education partners meeting will be crucial to strengthening our university network.”

“It’s important to enjoy the process of building, rather than simply chasing money or status,” said Sylvie Bovet, Vice-President of Purchasing for Groupe Bovet. “Achieving things as a group could be an antidote to the excessive individualism that is widespread among the new generation of businesspeople.
