Caroline Bérubé, managing partner of HJM Asia Law, is a regular speaker at many international conferences in North America, Europe and Asia on corporate and commercial law, employment and IP matters in Asia, with a strong focus on China and South East Asia.

She graduated from McGill University (Canada) with BCL and LLB degrees in the 1990s. She completed a one-year program at the Faculty of Law of the National University of Singapore in 1998-1999. She is admitted to practice in New York and Singapore.

Caroline has been working as a lawyer for nearly 18 years in Asia (Singapore, Thailand and China). Prior to founding her own firm in 2005, she worked for a UK and a Chinese for 7 years. Her clients are active in technology, entertainment, manufacturing and services.


  • Enforce your contractual rights after signing a contract with your  Chinese business partner (distributor or manufacturer);
  • Find out available tools to check if your future Chinese business partner is financially sound and has money to pay you;
  • Negotiate the most appropriate payment mechanisms to get paid;
  • Include key terms in your contracts; and
  • Learn about the arbitration options and court systems in China (timing, costs, neutrality of the judges/arbitrators).
